Way too many times, I've heard and read girls ranting that they can't afford to buy cosmetics. A handful of times, I have people judging me for buying loads of makeup, including high end ones, like it's a crime. Here's what you need to know: I am a full time college student who works part time to fully support her non-schooling expenses which includes cosmetic addiction. If you think that I have well-off parents and boyfriend to buy me whatever I want, you couldn't be more wrong!
In order to fulfill my need for makeup, I practice many budgeting methods that make this hobby a lot more meaningful and not whine and moan about not being able to afford anything.
For this new series, every now and then, I'll be talking about a particular method that I use to reduce my cosmetic expenses. Whether you're a student or already working, I hope you'll find my Beauty Budgeting Tips useful to help you get the product you want without overspending. Many times it's not that we can't afford it, rather we are not willing to afford it. It's all about maximizing your OWN consumer surplus.
To kick start Chapter One of Beauty Budgeting, tell me:
"How much, on average, do you spend on cosmetics a month?"

Hey this sounds really interesting!
Hmm...I think I spend about $30-40 on makeup a month. That's probably not as much as other people, but just like you, I'm a FT college student with a PT job and FT summer jobs, and no financially-supportive parents (and the boyfriend's got his own financial issues to worry about. lol). Besides, I'm not a huge makeup buff, so I give you MAJOR PROPS to be able to budget yourself and afford all these products! :) Show those other girls how hard other people work for what they enjoy. :)
Hmmm... i don't really have a fixed amount actually! It largely depends on when MAC releases their new collections! haha!! I can go for months without spending anything (not many other choices to buy here in India anyways! :P)! :)
I'm excited to read more on this one!! :D
you know i get pissed when people think i'm so spoiled and i have life easy. i don't work but i do take care of my husband who's in the u.s. air force and i do a whole lot more than what they think. but they think i have things handed to me. *whatever* it's not a crime to be able to have what you want when you work hard for it. can't wait for your series though! i'm sure it's gonna be super helpful.
I love this idea of yours!
Hopefully it will help us girls out there who try our best to leave some moolah to spend each month =D
Usually I don't have a specific budget, so if you can imagine a heartbeat graph, that's probably how much I spend. Average, RM100 a month?
I'm a sucker for sales and hauls, hence the outta control spending =)
Hope this helps!
i suppose this shouldn't only be beauty budgeting, but budgeting your money for everything!
no point giving urself a budget on MU while u spend the rest of your $$ into clothes/ shoes etc etc or other hobbies.
i don't have a budget to be honest, as some months i spend alot and some others i spend much lesser than normal :)
but as long as you play safe and save some money b4 u start spending, i reckon that's fine. no more saying "oooh! that is so exp and i can't afford it!"
i think i spend less than RM50 per month on cosmetics. i actually control myself to not simply spend on unnecessary cosmetics, i mean its not that i always make up, so my cosmetics can actually last for quite some times.. ;)
unless there are attractive adv or new sample giveaways on cosmetics which can draw my attention.. then i may consider buying them ;)
hi. i'm new here. as for me, i don't have a specific monthly budget for make up n cosmetics. there are times i spend a lot for hauls and online shopping and then i can go without buying anything for months!
and i also tend to sell off whatever item that doesn't suit me. that way i never ran out of cash.hehe..
oh... let me see... i spend around 10-50AUD for cosmetics every now and then. Not really a frequent buyer of cosmetics now! since i have plenty and yet to finish any of them. i think i have too much clothes compare to cosmetics. oh wait, they are both a lot wtf. T___T...
i think i need to control my budget!!
your post makes me think a lot. Well, i am on shopping ban for pretty long though. its kinda working i think =x
I'm not sure how much i spend actually. haha.. mostly i only buy cosmetics when i find good deals or offers=) it makes me feel better even if i just save a ringgit or two. like other girls that comment i also spend more on some months and less on some months. but one thing is for sure, i make sure i stay on my budget and never overspend.=)
in a given spree...i can fork out about upto rm 200..but then dats like once in evry 4-5 months..so far in total..my makeup collection has reached a (to me) massive RM 1500 worth..in just 2 years like dat..
depends la..if it really catches my eye n i do thk i em em..ill b itchy fingers..
like a lot of people, i have no budget for this. i just set the budget of my monthly expenses but normally, i always got over budget due to the.... sales!!!!! :P
Hmm i don't have a specific budget and a lot depends on new MAC collections too but sometimes i get itchy fingers and start browsing LYN and ebay for stuff unavailable locally.. but if i were to average it out i'd say probably RM400-500 per month or more i guess..and i also hate it when people judge.
haha I usually put myself on a ban after Christmas. lol
If I do spend on makeup, it's usually about 10-20 Can dollars? I don't go by the month, I shop whenever I feel like it. And i buy most of my makeup items on sale. Because everything a collection comes out, by the next season, the old collection goes on sale. I resist and don't pull out my debit card. lol
