The highly popular Beauty Diary Masks from Taiwan have been raved about by girls everywhere. At about RM3 per piece from online sellers, they were affordable too. A close friend who used to bring in these masks from Taiwan told me that the cost price was around RM2.40 a piece. So, you can imagine my surprise when the boy's sisters came back from the night market and bought a box of 10 at RM20, meaning that the masks were sold below cost. How can that be? As it turns out, they had unknowingly bought imitations. By the way, the fake one smelled like berry too.
I've put both fake and genuine masks side by side to see if I could spot any distinct differences. This post reveals them...
The comparisons were made not only with the same Mixed Berry mask but also other flavors
Incomplete dot on key: This may not be a sure indication but the dot on the key should be at least more than half completed. Left is fake
Blurred and uneven seal: The fake mask is messily sealed compared to the genuine one. The seal imprint of the genuine one also looks clearer. Left is fake
Blurred and uneven seal: Similar to the front, the seal imprint on the back is also unclear
Raised expiry date figures: The fake mask doesn't have while the genuine one does. However, this doesn't apply to the Apple mask. From what I've read, the Apple mask doesn't have raised figures on the packet. Left is fake
Kink more than 1cm from top: The fake mask's kink was 1.5 from the top edge of the packet. I've compared all 12 genuine masks that I have in my possession and all of their kinks are situated at 1cm from the top edge. Middle is fake
All three are genuine and as you can see, all of them have kinks in the correct position, have raised figures and are all neatly sealed. The differences that I've observed are not sure fire ways to tell a fake mask from a genuine one. Imitation packaging can and will be further improved to look more genuine.Unless you're buying the masks at a higher retail price from Guardian Pharmacy, it's quite difficult to to tell if you've bought a genuine mask or not until you have the fake one side-by-side. I'd highly discourage purchasing masks from night markets and unauthorized stalls. Purchasing online is still relatively safe as long as you're purchasing from reputable sellers such as beauty_zone33 of Lowyat.net. Basically if you're getting the masks at less than RM2.50 a piece, it's very likely that they're fake.
Please do not attempt to use fake masks. You don't know what's in them and you'll be at risk of serious skin problems and allergies.

Thank you so much for sharing. This news is scaring. I quickly looked for my masks at once, luckily, mine is not fake.
This is a really useful post!! I was concerned earlier when Plue told me about the fake masks, but when i went home and check, i think the ones i bought were genuine! Phew!!
That being said, i don't think i'll be purchasing any more MBD masks online just to be safe, which is quite a shame because i've heard so many wonderful things about them!
thanks for posting this up :D
Waaah even inexpensive masks like these also they wanna have fakes?! Terrible! *shudder* Thanks for highlighting this!
thanks!
funnily enough i tried my first beautydiary mask yesterday, the hudrating one with blue snowflakes on the packet, it was the only one i have in my stash. i thought it was rubbish and left my skin feeling parched and irritable!
then now i read your post. need to dig the packet out of the bin now to see if it was fake! haha!
i bought from her too :D so i guess mine one is genuine !!! whoppy
sellers can mark up the fake's price so ppl won't suspect. i honestly think i want to stay away already. too many fakes, seller might even got cheated by their supplier we wouldn't know :(
sigh. and guardian is so damn expensive :(
Hi...
thanks for the heads up regarding the face mask. Although i haven't tried it, but wanting so much to try it.... Actually, the reason for not trying out yet is its not available here in our country (Philippines). I've been looking at ebay and some resellers also. And some are quite costly. The online stores that carries it are all in chinese character....
Thanks for the cautioning us.
holy crap! i think i just bought fake ones from an online store, www.miaomiao.com.my. it costs RM2 each, it's sealed badly, and they don't have those raised figures. however, the kink is still at 1cm. and i have three masks left! should i just use them? since i've used two of em already...there weren't any bad effects on my skin so far though...and i can't tell if any masks work...but thanks for this post, u just saved me from buying ten pieces more!
great post connie! if buy directly frm taiwan, can we assume they are all real?
Haha.. Shawn is selling mask..

I've compared mine to the fakies in your post, and I think I have the genuine ones! I bought them in China, and not even in a beauty or drugstore, but I never thought they could be fake! I'm glad they aren't...
Thanks for sharing this! I've been having a no-blog/internet weekend. So far, I've only been reading your post and commenting on it!

Hi Connie,
Fabulous blog and I am grateful to you for sharing about the fake My Beauty Diary masks. If not for you, I did not realise this at all.
I dont believe in fake anything especially in skincare since our skin is suppose to absorb the nutrients to enjoy the true benefits!!!
Thank you so much for this enlightening information for my family & I are huge fans of these MBD masks since we tried some maska when we bougfht them from Cosmed stores in Taipei years ago.
Going forward, I will buy them from the authorised stores such as Guardian stores in Singapore & Malaysia or Manning in HK or Cosmed in Taiwan.
If it is risking your own skin or your family's skin's safety, the risk of saving 50cents a mask between on-line stores and pharmacy chains is really not worth it.
God only knows what ingredients are used and worse, imagine the cheap chemicals that are being absorbed into the skin!!! Reminds me of those fake eggs & milk-powder from China.
These fakers should be taken to court and put in jail for not just this type of fraud but physical harm to the body.
I am SO SO ANGRY at these greedy fakers!!!!
Connie, once again, THANK YOU
DG
