Comparison: Maybelline The Colossal vs Maybelline The Magnum

Seeing double?
Those two bright yellow tubes of mascaras may look identical but if you look closer, they're actually not the same. On the left is the US-released Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express and the other is the Asia-released Maybelline The Magnum Volum' Express.

Question is, do the different names imply that they're different mascaras or is "Magnum" simply easier to pronounce for non-speaking Asians? I wouldn't discount the latter -- no offense intended whatsoever!

Read on for the side-by-side comparison...

Yes, there are differences. That's why we're doing this elaborate comparison. First thing you'll notice different is the brush. The Colossal has a large carrot-shaped brush while The Magnum's brush is less wide and flattened if you turn it to the side. It's also slightly curved. It's not hard to guess which brush I prefer. The brush's flat side helps with reaching outer corner and bottom lashes while the curve lifts the lashes.

Behold my naked lashes! As you can see, they're almost invisible -- pun intended.

The Colossal: Volumizes and separates but not as much drama as promised. Doesn't hold up curl and weighs down lashes. Washes off with water as it is non-waterproof. Has strong rose scent. Click for full review

The Magnum: Volumizes and lengthens significantly. Holds up curl. Has a tendency to clump. Waterproof formula removes with cleansing oil or eye makeup remover. Has light plastic scent

Quite obviously, The Magnum totally knocked out The Colossal in terms of overall performance. I'm not surprised since Asian mascaras are usually far more superior than Western ones.

Despite the fact that The Magnum has been my daily mascara of choice for the past month, I've already stopped using it for good as I'm writing this post. My lashes have been dropping out by the root every time I curl my lashes and apply mascara to the point that I'm developing a bald spot on my lash line. I haven't had this problem since Maybelline's Lash Discovery donkey years ago *sighs*

After my experiences with about 30 different types of mascaras ranging from high end to drugstore, I can confidently say that Asian mascaras are almost always the better ones. Western mascaras may work for those with naturally full and curly lashes but they will simply weigh thin and stick-straight Asian lashes down. If you're on the hunt for a good mascara, save yourself the trouble and eliminate all Western choices. Though I haven't completely given up on Western mascaras, I'm yet to come across one that holds my devotion longer than my trusty Maybelline Turbo Boost does.

Maybelline The Magnum Volum' Express mascara retails at leasing healthcare stores for RM35.90
Maybelline The Colossal is not available in Malaysian stores. Please refer to sgdrugstore.

haha so care to give us a summary of your 30 mascaras?
whats your fav?

Connie De Alwis said...

Imo: It does. thanks

ning*star: hmm?? You mean your magnum's brush looks like the colossal's brush? The colossal brush is completely rounded while magnum's is flattened

Lynn: You're not serious, are you? Lol. As mentioned at the end of the post, my current favorite is Maybelline Turbo Boost.

how many coats did you use to achieve that? i have barely invisible lashes but i still look like i have no lash after 2 or 3 coats of mascara - and i feel it's so thick already making my lash feeling clumsy.

second lyNn about doing review of other mascaras. i gave up using mascara long time ago and only recently started using mascara again and would like to know what to look for. :)

Coco: I don't count coats. I count dips and I used 1 dip to achieve that effect. How many coats is up to the individual. My suggestion would be to just apply until you achieve your desired effect as long as the lashes don't clump up. Perhaps you can try out different types of mascara until you find one that suits you.

I have done more than 15 mascara reviews on this blog. Please go to "Mascara" under the labels. I have TRIED over 30 mascaras before in my lifetime so if you're considering a particular mascara, feel free to check with me if I've used it before and I'll give you my opinion on it. However, I won't review all 30 mascaras as suggested by Lynn because at the present moment I don't own all that I've tried. That said, I only review what I own.

Connie De Alwis said...

Ee Von: Sucks when mascaras do that :( I have very few lashes as it is!

Xin: no harm giving it a try :) curl well and you should get a similar effect

Fantastic review! I had NO idea The Magnum was even out there. I neeed this. I wonder if there's something comparable at my Daiso/Marukai or Mitsuwa? Hum...

And btw, WHY were you not on my blogroll? I'm so sorry...I'm adding you right now! xo

Mrs. K: High 5! It's a very reliable mascara :)

Sue Lynn: I've never tried full and soft but I've heard great things! I like hypercurl too but I like the extra volume from turbo boost

Recessionista: Thank you :) If you're at Daiso, try looking for the High Curling Mascara. It's pretty decent! Did a review some time ago http://www.skindeco.net/2009/01/more-from-daiso-blue-green-fotd.html

Thanks for the add!

I've been holding off from getting this for the longest time, but I'm ready to cave in and get it now! It was down to RM25.90 during the Watsons Sale.

wow... I never knew this. Maybe I should start purchasing Asian mascaras.

It sounds like you're advocating the Magnum mascara, but why would you do that if they made your eyelashes fall out?

Connie De Alwis said...

Anonymous: I try to be unbiased with my reviews. Fact is, I do like the mascara very much and I'd repurchase it over and over if it wasn't for the lash-falling. This doesn't happen to everyone and so far, I'm the only one I know that's having this problem. I know of people who have been using this mascara without their lashes falling out.
Thus, I am advocating this mascara because it's a very good mascara. Just, unfortunately, not suitable for my lashes
